In contemporary times one cannot imagine a normal life without technological advancements and network devices. But what makes technology so helpful is the internet. It enables us to connect and communicate with the rest of the world from our comfort zone. Gone are the days when one would have to have a bunch of wires going through their home to get a stable internet connection.

Today our lives have become much easier, thanks to the invention of Wi-Fi. But, even now we’re are not that technologically advance to have a stable connection always, and hence every now and then we experience a lousy internet connection. So, here are a few tips and tricks that can help you improve the efficiency of your network devices.

1. Router Placement

Most of the time we decide to put our Wi-Fi router in such a place where it’s difficult to see it because obviously, no one wants their guest to spot a router as the first thing on entering the house. But, one of the most important points to consider for a router to work properly is its placement.

If your networking router is placed in a way where it is surrounded by too much material or it is placed in a corner where most of the router is surrounded by surrounding walls, then there a high chance that you might not receive good signals. This happens because different material responds differently to radio signals produced by a router.

Metals, mirrors, and other shiny surfaces will deflect them while other surfaces such as walls and wood will not let signals pass through them.  Therefore, always place your router in an open place within your home, where there isn’t much surrounding surface to block or deflect the signal.

2. Keep Radio Devices Away From Your Router

Wi-Fi routers work by emitting radio signals which are then received by the antenna in your phone and Pc’s. in case there is another radio device nearby such as a microwave, a radio, or a remote-control car then there are high chances the signals emitted by these devices may interrupt with signals of your router, as a result, causing disruption.

One easy way is to place your router out of such zones where there are high chances of such radio signals. Another way is to increase the frequency at which your router works. Usually, all radio devices such as the one mentioned above, and your router works at a frequency of 2.4 GHz.

You cannot increase or decrease the frequency of those devices, but you can do it with your router. Simply go to the admin account provided to you by your ISP and change signal frequency to auto-channeling or you can also use a router that works on 5GHz frequency  at 802.11n

3. Signal Repeater

Most of the time stock network devices that come with your internet connection from your internet service provider are not that good and their range is only good for a small radius.

Hence if you are sitting in your bedroom and your router is placed across the hallway then there are high chances that you might not get a good signal.

A recommended solution for such scenarios is using a signal repeater. A signal repeater or Wi-Fi repeater in this case is a device capable of repeating and the signal received from your original router, and then forward it to the next radius, hence increasing the range.

For that purpose, you would have to place it at the borderline of the radius of your original router where it can still receive signals, and then forward it to its very own radius.

4. Firmware Update

Last but not least make sure that you have an updated version of firmware for your router. Firmware is like software. It is an operating system that is permanently stored in a hardware device such as your router.

The only difference is that unlike mobile OS it cannot update itself automatically and would also not disturb you with constant reminders in case it needs an update.

The whole procedure is manual, and you need to keep an eye on the issue yourself. But don’t worry it’s not that difficult. You can update it easily by logging into your id provided by your ISP.

Once updated, it will be installed in your Wi-Fi router and you will be good to go. A timely firmware update will also resolve other performance issue and security related issues.

However, these are not the only things that matter in case you are facing trouble with your Wi-Fi connectivity, yet these are some of the most general issues faced by people.

These were a few of the tips that will help you improve the performance of your routers. Follow the above-mentioned tips and see improved results for your network devices yourself. Doing so will surely enable you to upload that file for your client or stream your favorite online shows in the nick of time.
